Throwback Thursdays Art

Every Thursday, as part of my personal “enriched environment” initiative, I post a piece of art, usually from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which recently released online some 400,000 high-resolution images of its collection.  I won’t name the piece or the artist, but instead invite you to study the image and write a comment about what you see or what it makes you think of.  All images will have a sun (or sunlight) in them somewhere.

So study the picture, and leave your reflections below!

Note:  To examine the picture in full size, click on the image, then click again on the words “full resolution.”

  1. Weird picture.
    1. All cows but one facing away from the sun.
    2. The top half of the picture is just sky.
    3. There seems to be some kind of thorny twiggy fence along the bottom of the picture.
    4. The dog is looking straight at the camera.
    5. The boy’s asleep on the job. Was it tough tending a herd of cattle back then?

  2. Well, it seems so many of these artworks have the sun off to the left of the left edge of the picture. Interesting!

In this painting I sense that the clouds are rallying and getting ready to gang up on the sun. They seem aggressive.

The tall building on the horizon on the far left looks like a modern-day skyscraper. It seems out of place.

    Thank you!

  3. When I worked on a cattle ranch there were cow plops everywhere. I can’t believe this boy is sleeping on the ground. And the ground is completely free of cow plops.

  4. In the immediate foreground you have a line of thorny bushes separating the scene from the viewer, me. Then in the main foreground you have a serene depiction of cows at rest and a sleeping boy. The doggie adds contrast as it seems alert, I think. In the background on the right you have adult industry; it looks like their fishing and one man is leading a horse; also there’s a boat moving. and further in the background you have the results of the adults’ industry:: impressive buildings .

The cows look posed to me, I don’t think in real life they’d end up that way, I think they’d spread out a little to have more room .

It’s a little too posed for my liking, but I’m glad I saw it.

  5. While looking at this picture I noticed that all of the cows have horns that are curving up except for the cow of the very right. That cow’s horns are curving down.

  6. Dear “Parking Suns”,

I’m taking care of my grandson this weekend and we went through many of these pictures. He’s drawing “our favorites” so I can have them on my refrigerator. I wish you could see the cows and the dog. They’re wonderfully wild, And the sky is pink, blue and white, which makes me think of a faded American flag.

Thank you for giving us a way to spend this time together.

    Sincerely,

    Leigh S.

  7. Based on my personal experiiences, I agree with the comment about cow poop. The picture is pure fictional in my opinion. Nice, but it rings a false note.

  8. cow plop. cow poop. cow crud. cow dirt. cow dung. cow droppings. pasture pies. manure. night soil. excrement. digested waste material discharged from the bowels.

not a drop of it in this pastoral picture.

but what about cow urine? nobody has mentioned that.

there’s also the dog, the horse, the men, the boy. they all have to go, too.

and over it stretches the pink and clumpy gray sky, like internal organs exposed.
