More Tips for Better Swallowing and Less Choking

Here are some common-sense tips I need to start following more diligently, as these days I tend to cough a lot while eating.

  1.  Avoid distractions while eating.  E.g., turn off the TV; don’t read a book while you eat.
  2.  Sit up straight while you eat, and remain upright for 20 minutes after each meal.
  3.  Alternate swallowing small amounts of food with small sips of water, perhaps through a straw.
  4.  Avoid mixing solid food with liquids:  no vegetable soups, no morning breakfast cereal with milk.
  5.  Don’t eat within 3 hours of bedtime.
  6.  Focus on the flavors and textures of each bite of food.
  7.  If you’re eating with a family member or friend, ask that person to do most of the talking.  For example, ask them what their plans are for when they take you on an all-expenses-paid trip to Kenya to see the giraffes.
