The Sun in Poetry

The Dark Hills

Dark hills at evening in the west,
Where sunset hovers like a sound
Of golden horns that sang to rest
Old bones of warriors under ground,
Far now from all the bannered ways
Where flash the legions of the sun,
You fade—as if the last of days
Were fading, and all wars were done.

– Edwin Arlington Robinson

Note:  Edwin Arlington Robinson was a friend?  colleague?  of my grandfather, the playwright John Frederick Ballard.  I have many first edition copies of Robinson’s books, which he autographed for my grandfather and inscribed with personal messages.

My grandfather wrote plays which were produced on Broadway; some were made into movies.  “When’s Your Birthday?” stars Joe E. Brown and is available on Amazon.com.  “Young America” stars Spencer Tracy and is also for sale on Amazon.
