Wish I Was Here!

I just received an email inviting me to register for the Peaks to Portland open water swim.  It’s 2.4 miles of swimming from Peaks Island through the main harbor in Portland, ending at a beach on one side of the city.  I’ve done this race before and found it amazing.

Here’s the email invite:

And here are the instructions telling you how to register and prepare:

July 18, 2026

Calling all open water swimmers! The Peaks to Portland, one of the world’s oldest open-water swims, is returning once again. This historic 2.4-mile challenge crosses Casco Bay from Peaks Island to Portland’s East End Beach. Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or a recreational swimmer seeking a unique adventure, Peaks to Portland offers an unforgettable race experience benefiting the YMCA of Southern Maine.

The Peaks to Portland Swim is a fundraising event for the YMCA of Southern Maine. Funds raised by each swimmer support critical programs for children and families across local YMCA branches. The registration fee covers participation only and does not count toward the required fundraising minimum outlined during registration.

Registration is open and spots are limited. Additional spots may be added, but availability is not guaranteed. Registration closes Friday, July 10 at midnight, or when all spots are filled—whichever comes first!

***************

The first time I swam this race, I wore a “shortie” wetsuit that covered just my torso and my legs as far as my knees.  I was standing on the beach at Peaks Island before the race started, and a man came up to me and said, “The first time I swam this, I, too, wore a wetsuit like that…”  I looked around and saw that everyone else had long wetsuits on, covering their legs and arms.

Then the race started, and I entered the water and realized how freezing it was.  Nonetheless, I swam the entire 2.4 miles and felt great afterward.

I’d give anything to swim the race again this year.
