How I Spent My 70th Birthday

A few days ago I turned 70.  It doesn’t feel any different than, say, turning 45 or 50 – I’m still me.

Two events that made the day special:

First, I had my quarterly visit with my Movement Disorder Specialist, the doctor who’s treating me for Parkinson’s disease.  We (the doctor, my husband, and I) decided I should get Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), whereby a surgeon will drill two holes in my skull, feed two tiny wires partway into my brain, then thread the wires under my skin to a battery pack inserted just below my collar bone.  It sounds crazy but it’s a safe procedure that has helped thousands of people with Parkinson’s.  You can learn more by watching the YouTube clip below.

Second, my husband and I went out for dinner at the best restaurant in town.  The dessert was a chocolate chip cookie baked in a small cast iron skillet, as you can see in the picture above.  It makes me want to turn 70 again.

Going forward, I expect I’ll have a lot to write about concerning DBS, so stay tuned.
