Parkinson Pantheon: Jimmy Choi

Jimmy Choi is someone I’ve admired for years.  Diagnosed with PD as a young man, he spent many years just sitting on his couch, moping and putting on weight.  Then one day he fell down the stairs in his home while he was carrying his baby son.  Fortunately, the baby was not hurt, but it motivated Jimmy to take control of his life.

He started just walking outdoors on the block where he lived.  Then he walked farther and farther, and evenutally was running long distances.  He entered races, then triathlons, and progressed to completing an iron man triathlon:  2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and a 26.22-mile marathon (running).  According to Wikipedia, the font of all knowledge, an iron man triathlon “is widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world.”

Jimmy also delivers a terrific 17-minute TED talk, which you’ll see below.
