Throwback Thursdays Art

Every Thursday, as part of my personal “enriched environment” initiative, I post a piece of art, usually from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which recently released online some 400,000 high-resolution images of its collection.  All artwork will show a sun (or sunlight) somewhere.

I won’t name the piece or the artist, but instead invite you to study the art and post a comment addressing one or more of these questions:

  • What is going on in this picture?
  • What do you see that makes you say that?
  • What more can you find?

If you have another idea, run with it.

  1. This is a terrifically dramatic painting! The horses seem to be driven in a tight circle, as on the left they are coming forward but on the right they’ve turned a tight corner and are heading back into the background. The light on the main group of white horses, on the right, is absolutely stunning. It doesn’t seem possible that white could be so bright. The arrangement of the horses builds to a climax in the center of the picture. On the left you have mostly dark (brown and black) horses. The line of these horses builds upward to the center brown horse, which is raising its head high. Then you have the line of white horses in a decrescendo from the center (high) to the far right (lower).

There is so much energy in this painting. I find it unfathomable to figure out how the painter created so much energy. I am tongue tied.

And to think this was done in 1853 (look in the lower right corner after you enlarge the painting), but is still fresh and vibrant today.

It’s one of the most stunning paintings I’ve ever seen.

Incidentally, the sun is outside the frame but high up on the right. Atypical for the Thursday artwork on this site.
