Throwback Thursdays Art

Every Thursday, as part of my personal “enriched environment” initiative, I post a piece of art, usually from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which recently released online some 400,000 high-resolution images of its collection.  All artwork will show a sun (or sunlight) somewhere.

I won’t name the piece or the artist, but instead invite you to study the art and post a comment addressing one or more of these questions:

  • What is going on in this picture?
  • What do you see in the picture?
  • What does it make you think of?
  • What observations can you make?

  1. I love this picture! Thank you for posting it. !!!
IT looks like a fun day for sailing, but maybe something is wrong. The main boat has a red flag ( I think ) and in the other boat the two young men seem to be going , “Huh?????”
It’s a little bit funny. Doesn’t seem dangerous. Pretty colors but look out! Clouds in the sky !!!!

    Thank you again!

  2. The picture appears still, frozen in time. Yet you have to take into account the rocking of the boats in the water (look at the waves) and the fact that the front sail on the main boat in the center is neither furled nor hoisted all the way. it appears to be flapping in the wind.
    Like this picture.

  3. I think there’s something in the water between the two boats. At least two of the men are looking down into the water, and it seems like the man on the right is holding a net. Or maybe a coiled rope.

At the bottom of the picture in the center is a white ghostly elongated image, shaped like a giant fish. What do you think?

I also want to comment on the sun – the intended purpose of this exercise. Once again it’s off screen and to the left. The boat on the left is showing its shadowy side, very gray. The other boat is gleaming white in the light.

Something intense is going on in this picture but I don’t know what it is. At first glance the painting looks placid, but then the postures of the men indicate that something is amiss. I think.

By the way, I enjoy these weekly paintings and I also like some of the other posts. You make Parkinson’s seem so fun and lively. I can’t believe I am saying this.

  4. This painting seems, off-balance in a way. The sky is dark gray, but the ocean is a light blue. It reverses the normal order of things because usally the sky in the daytime is lighter than the Earth.
I AGREE WITH THE OTHER COMMENTORS THAT THIS PAINTING IS A BIG QUESTION MARK BECAUSE WHAT IS THE REASON WHY THE THREE HUMANS ARE LOOKING SO INTENSELY AT THE SPACE BETWEEN THEM ? THE PAINTING RAISES A QUESTION BUT OFFERS NO ANSWERS.
