Awakening the Heart: Exploring Poetry in Elementary and Middle School is the title of a book written by Georgia Heard, an internationally famous poet and teacher. I studied poetry (and teaching) with Georgia when I was a graduate student at Teachers College Columbia University. Her approach to teaching and writing has stayed with me, and I’ve seen dramatic results when I’ve taught poetry to school children, adult ESL students, and teachers at my charter school, the Bronx Charter School for Better Learning.
Ms. Doris Fleming, another teacher at my school, was also strongly influenced by Georgia’s books. She taught Kindergarten this year, and in the spring the students read, discussed and wrote poem after poem. The ones I collected here are remarkable, amazing, and astounding in so many, many ways.
