Enough With The Sonnets Already!

Doctor Exam

I had a slew of medical appointments in Manhattan today.  This sonnet emerged while I was riding the train into the city.

En Route to Some Doctor Appointments

I have appointments with some docs today.
They’ll check my skin, my pulse, and look me over.
From doc to doc, it’s just a grand survey
Before I’m lying ‘neath a bed of clover.
No!  Wait!  I’m thinking rashly!  It’s not time
To prep the casket, lay aside my pen.
I still enjoy my food and writing rhyme,
Working out, and having sex with men.
I love the outer world, the world of thought,
The world of youth, of lucky folks who age,
The world of trips, the world of things I’ve bought,
Of setting down my feelings on this page.
My life is great.  There’s nothing I need prove –
Nothing to reject, regret, remove.
