Every Thursday, as part of my personal “enriched environment” initiative, I post a piece of art, usually from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which recently released online some 400,000 high-resolution images of its collection. All artwork will show a sun (or sunlight) somewhere.
I won’t name the piece or the artist, but instead invite you to study the art and post a comment addressing one or more of these questions:
- What is going on in this picture?
- What do you see that makes you say that?
- What more can you find?

Wowzer ! This is a strange painting. What’s going on? There’s a bank of clouds in front and they’re being kept from the sunlight, so they are a dark gray. There’s a second bank of clouds behind that which are shining in the sun and peaking above the first darker bank. There are a few wisps of clouds – it seems like three separate bunches are floating in the sky overhead. They are lit by the sun.
What’s going on? The sun, which you can’t see, is illuminating some clouds but not others. And down on the earth, it looks like trees and maybe some buildings are standing in the dark, mostly on the lower right corner although I see one tree more or less in the center.
Is that what you mean by “what’s going on in this picture?” A picture by necessity is static, so I can’t say whether anything is moving or doing.
This question makes me feel like I’m back in school !!! When the teacher would posit conundrums! !!!
I think it’s raining under the dark clouds on the left. I see diagonal lines that for me indicate rain.
This piecture is so crazy because I can’t imagine a bright cloud right next to a dark one.
For me this is just a somewhat startling painting of a cloud bank. What is startling is the back is lit by the sun but the front is in shade. It’s almost like the sun is hiding between the two.

The cloud formation in the upper left corner is a teenaged rabbit floating on its back and looking lasciviously at the lei that just floated over from Hawaii, but look out! in the upper right corner it’s Zeus’ brawny arm flinging darts at the floating bunny. Looks like rabbit stew for din-din! SHUT UP! SHUT UP! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE !!!!!!!!!!

I am not certain that this counts as an answer to the first question ” what is going on in this picture ? ” , but the line of land at the bottom of the picture rises slightly going from left to right . Does that count ? BTW I have a question of my own ; how big is this picture and what was the artiste trying to convey by painting it ? Is there some special or hidden meaning in the bright clouds rising up above the rain storm clouds ? It would be appreciated if anyone can answer that !
Something strange is going on over on the left because I see the back, white clouds there are glowing red as if there were a fire or the setting sun itself, when in fact all other indications are the sun is off to the right somewhere. So I ask you what is making the redish pinkish glow???
Sunshine behind rain. The extra clouds floating brightly overhead make me feel hope and happiness.
